چکیده
Mechanistic hypotheses to explain mycorrhizal enhancement of root hydraulic conductivity (L,) suggest that phosphorus (P) nutr i t ion, plant growth substances and/or al tered morphology may be responsible . Such ideas are based on work with VA (vesicular-arbuscular) mycorrhizas . S ince VA mycorrhizas and ectomycorrhizas di f fer in many respects , they may alter host plant water uptake via different mechanisms. This paper examines L, in various ectomycorrhizal associat ions whi le consider ing factors which are important to the VA mycorrhizal e f fect on L,. Douglas fir Pseudotsuga met&&i (Mirb.) France] seedlings inoculated with the ectomycorrhizal fungi Laccuriu bicolor (Maire) Orton and Hebelotna crustuliniforme (Bull. ex St. Amans) Quel. and non-inoculated seedlings infected naturally with Thelephora were grown under three low levels of P fertilization (1, 10 and IOO,uM P). Seedl ing morphology, t i ssue P levels , ,L, and plant growth substance levels in xylem sap were measured after nine months growth. Increased tissue P and decreased root/shoot ratio correlated with increased L, in each of the mycorrhizal treatments . When adjusted for the effect of these two factors , L, of Laccariu and Hebeloma seedl ings was st i l l lower than the Thelephora seedlings. In a subsequent experiment, the L, of seedl ings with Hebeloma and Rhizopogon vinicolor Smith mycorrhizas was compared to the L, of non-mycorrhizal seedlings.,(grown at 100 mM P).and no differences were found among treatments . The lack of an ectomycorrhizal effect on L, i s qui te different from the enhancement of host L, by VA mycorrhizas . Zeat in r iboside concentrat ions of Thelephoraand Hebeloma-infected seedl ings were s imilar , yet higher than with Laccuriu. There was no relationship between plant growth substances and L, in ectomycorrhizal Douglas fir, despite lower zeatin riboside concentrations for Laccariu-inoculated plants.

Seasonal variation in the hormone content of willow: I. Changes in abscisic Acid content and cytokinin activity in the xylem sap.
Changes in levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin activity in the xylem sap of willow (Salix viminalis, L.) were followed throughout two growth cycles.Growth in spring was preceded by decreasing levels of ABA and an increase in cytokinin activity. The onset of dormancy was associated with low levels of cytokinins and high contents of ABA. A second peak of ABA was found in July which was no...

To elucidate the phytohormonal basis of the feedback regulation of leaf senescence induced by potassium (K) deficiency in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), two cultivars contrasting in sensitivity to K deficiency were self- and reciprocally grafted hypocotyl-to-hypocotyl, using standard grafting (one scion grafted onto one rootstock), Y grafting (two scions grafted onto one rootstock), and invert...
متن کاملEffect of partial rootzone drying on the concentration of zeatin-type cytokinins in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) xylem sap and leaves.
Decreased cytokinin (CK) export from roots in drying soil might provide a root-to-shoot signal impacting on shoot physiology. Although several studies show that soil drying decreases the CK concentration of xylem sap collected from the roots, it is not known whether this alters xylem CK concentration ([CK(xyl)]) in the leaves and bulk leaf CK concentration. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plan...
متن کاملEffects of cotton rootstock on endogenous cytokinins and abscisic acid in xylem sap and leaves in relation to leaf senescence.
Leaf senescence varies greatly among cotton cultivars, possibly due to their root characteristics, particularly the root-sourced cytokinins and abscisic acid (ABA). Early-senescence (K1) and late-senescence (K2) lines, were reciprocally or self-grafted to examine the effects of rootstock on leaf senescence and endogenous hormones in both leaves and xylem sap. The results indicate that the graft...
متن کاملMutational analysis of branching in pea. Evidence that Rms1 and Rms5 regulate the same novel signal.
The fifth increased branching ramosus (rms) mutant, rms5, from pea (Pisum sativum), is described here for phenotype and grafting responses with four other rms mutants. Xylem sap zeatin riboside concentration and shoot auxin levels in rms5 plants have also been compared with rms1 and wild type (WT). Rms1 and Rms5 appear to act closely at the biochemical or cellular level to control branching, be...
